Facebook in China

You might not believe this…the country that has all kinds of imitations has its own imitation of FACEBOOK!

and yes! i got my own account..haa..

it has pretty much all the same features..even the same colours! but something cool is that they allow you to have personal template skins… so i tried this…

and yes, i have typed all my details in Chinese and i’m probably one of the few Singaporeans who signed up for an account so come China, interview me!!! Haa..

Btw, this China facebook thingy is called XIAONEI WANG

Xiaonei (Chinese: 校内网; literally “on-campus network”) is a social networking site with the look and feel of Facebook except that it is in Simplified Chinese. It is government sanctioned, whereas the idea of millions of citizens submitting personal details directly to American Facebook is frowned upon.

According to BeijingReview.com, as of November 2007, Xiaonei was “China’s largest online community website among universities” with more than 8.8 million active users and an estimated 15 million users who have registered their real names.[1]

Xiaonei.com is also considered to be the most powerful student social network service in Mainland China.

(from wikipedia)

So why did i get an account? Like erm, do i think i really have that many China friends?

Yes, i am gonna add Gong Li, Jet Li maybe Zhang Ziyi (oh wait, i’m sure she has Facebook, as in the English version) & superpoke all of them! Okay la enough of my silliness, well i currently work quite closely with PRC Students in my ministry so i’m quite sure many of them have. And plus, i have real Chinese friends from China!!! So it will be a good way to keep in touch with them.

Anyway, if you’re wondering where my profile pic was taken..yes, it was in China & a bed of purple flowers behind me!!!

Wow! i am excited, ha…cos’ it can break my 400+ friends record in the English FB.

What? 400?

okay, not a big figure for some American friends but for singaporeans, i think it’s quite woah!

this is not to boast but i was astonished myself when it started to climb beyond the 300 mark. Like, do i have that many friends??? I mean for the first 200 i was adding but now i hardly do that…but everyday, the figure is climbing. which is scary! but there were some boo boos a few times. Once was with a ex-poly friend called Yuhui.

Me: Hey, Yuhui, btw someone from your company added me. I think he’s called Martin, who’s that arh?

YH: Erm, I am Martin

Me: Huh? When did you become Martin? but the profile picture don’t look like you lei!

YH: it’s me lar.. -_-”

Me: Hahahaaa

so there i go…Facebook, Xiaoneiwang..here i come!

oct thots.

Man, busy.

i just kinda hate the four-letter-word but it’s really becoming a reality for me.

the end of the year means many things ongoing.

ministry/work wise, there’s quite a couple of matters for us to embrace for the next two years. and i am super excited to see how the Lord will work thru’ it all. More details, along the way…as we roll out the events one after another.

church wise - mainly is youth camp that i am overseeing & also directions & plans for 2008 for the youth ministry….and PLUS THE WEDDING OF THE YEAR! not mine of course…just that being the co-ordinator makes mes feel that it’s mine !

i am really getting stress-er (yes, i coin that term up) as we’re exactly one month away from William & Michelle’s wedding! BAH!!! But i know even if i ruin the wedding, i won’t ruin the marriage cos’ God is sovereign. ha. what an excuse! I hope they don’t get to read this..

On a personal note, I am thankful for the in-between smses, emails, facebook notes, msn chats etc between me and various people. i am thankful to how my dearest cousin, for first time in his life asking me for prayer requestS!!!!!!! uber uber uber touched siah by how God is moulding him in the army. Seth-walker-tan, if you get to read this, i hope u keep it going…. den attending elene & jiahui’s wedding over two weeks and late-nite chats with my mum as we reminisce over her good ole days of her 21st bday parties, wearing bare-back tops and the beach outings! oh man, i wish i cld have the time to scan all these photos and show u guys someday.

i just love the 2nd part of the year somehow..it’s nice to know the year is coming to an end & that, the new beginning of 2009 will bring fresh starts to all our journeys on earth.

Peace, out.

i want to eat white rabbit creamy candy again

White Rabbit Sweet

White Rabbit Sweet

Hands up, all those who have eaten the white rabbit sweet since young…

Me! Me! Me!

Unlike the other products which are less commonly eaten, i’m sure the white sweets are a popular choice with most Singaporeans.

White Rabbit Creamy Candy is perhaps the best known brand of Chinese-made candy in China, and the only one to be marketed significantly outside of that country.

That’s quoted in wikipedia. check out the details on wikipedia!

i wonder if you feel the same as me, sad that we have to stop eating our childhood sweet for a while, especially if the ban doesn’t get lifted by the next CNY. The other lingering thought will probably be: how much melamine have we consumed for the past years?

Alright, those are probably trivial. compared to the kind of fears a chinese has to face. i mean, imagine everyday they 提心吊胆 about the food they eat. but i think they don’t. i think most are numbed by the corruption they face, the poor quality products … in fact it’s all part of their lifestyle.

which is sad.

the face of china was set to change in recent hosting of olympics but yet, this has probably knocked the confidence of outsiders towards them after this recent food scare. let’s pray someday china’s products will be cheap, good & healthy. not poisonous. so that we can all get back to eating our favourite white candy sweets again.

Airport farewells

I never was a fond believer of airport-farewells.

It probably derived from a family culture that doesn’t send each other off, hardly do we also receive people at airports. I have been on so many trips where my parents just say their byes to me at home and then poof, i am off to a foreign land!

Ironically, i have been sending a number of people this year. Including sending a bunch of friends that i probably will never see again.

Final farewell at the airport

Final farewell at the airport

CTI Summer Team 08.

This was my first time sending them off, at an unearthly hour of 3am. If not for a ride from Leonard(who stays at Sgn Gardens! Another Hg/Sg kakee) i really would have hesitated to crawl out of my bed at that hour.

No tears, no sob-sob lines at the airport cos’ all of us were looking half dazed, and probably wondering what to make of the few weeks that our American friends had been here?

As Jennifer stood behind the barrier talking to me, she recounted how it just felt like they had just arrived in Singapore. Then Robin came along, and I couldn’t remember what else we spoke. But a few CTI members were in the check-in barrier, while the SG team were standing on the other side, separated by the barricade.

Then probably 30 min later, we were separted by miles and miles and miles of air.

I can still fondly remember;

Laura’s face blushing when i passed her an angbao, her first support for the 2nd full-time year.

whitney’s cute whispy voice asking to take a picture with me,

Jennifer complaining about wearing specs,

talking to Nicola in the YFC toilet,

watching Gentry dance to music at Bugis Village,

watching Jimmy teach them the Zhong Guo Hua dance moves,

Aaron asking me, “how did you guys know we love bacon?”,

DL dipping his numerous strawberries into the plate of sugar i passed him and

Robin repeatedly asking me about which Bible verse is more relevant for gospel sharing.

I don’t know how long these memories will last or how long they will take to fade away. Three weeks of friendship, though not in depth yet memorable. Will we see each other again? I don’t know. Perhaps never, but it doesn’t matter anymore for we all once served our Father and someday, we see other in Heaven again.

As a partner & observer of this CTI team, I have learnt to look at Christian musicians in a different way. I have learnt that they can also be servants, just like me. They also love their families, can have a burden for people and also go through as much struggles as a grassroots/non-musician like me. I cannot downplay their struggles that are just as real. Neither will i ever think that performing for the Lord is easier than doing street evangelism.

I hope they have learnt as much about what it means to be a servant for Christ. May they continue to use their lives to glorify Thee!
